I believe overtightening this chain causes premature wear on the clutch due to excessive drag. It does not have far to go, it does not need to be super tight. I would keep the intermediate drive chain (from clutch to meter ) a little loose. On the few that I have autopsied, it looks like the wrap spring gets deformed, I would presume from excessive torque. If you have at 20 or more clutches on your planter, and they are more than 3 or 4 years old, I would recommend keeping a spare on hand. They are the most reliable clutching option out there, but they still have a failure rate above 0%. They are lubed from the factory, and a wrap spring clutch will have problems if its not sufficiently lubed. I need to take it apart and see if the oil made it to the inside. Our chains were oiled before storage.and one clutch failed first thing this spring. Had three last year, right at the start, 5 year old clutches. Think that oil works into the clutch and lets the wrap spring slip. How do you lube your row drive chains? We seem to have trouble if the portion of the chains around the sprocket get oiled. Posted 21:58 (#4548857 - in reply to #4548826) Subject: RE: Anyone have Agleader surestop clutches go bad? I took 2 clutches completely off the two most problematic rows and it was smooth sailing the rest of the day. Anyone back this up? Not real wild about buying 12 new clutches, but hate running the planter without them. I thought these things were full proof but I called Precision today and they said they have heard of them failing when they get some age/use on them. First I suspected the RowFlow system having a glitch in it but I shut it off, unplugged the clutches at the meters and still had issues. Started up this morning and still had issues. 12 of them are 1 season old and the other 12 are 4 seasons old, (don't ask )! Started planting corn yesterday and things were good till about dark and I started having random rows on the 1/2 of the planter that has the older clutches start leaving unplanted spots in the field about 20' long. ![]() I have 24 Agleader electric sure stop clutches on a Kinze finger pickup planter.
